At your first meeting with a divorce attorney, consider it an interview. We ask questions to understand your situation. Then you ask us questions. We decide if it is a good fit for us to work together.

Keep in mind that we know nothing about your situation except what you may have told us over the phone when you made your appointment. That means we will be asking a lot of questions while you are telling us about your situation.

It is helpful to have the following with you at the initial meeting:

• Questions about us or the divorce process

• Concerns about your situation

• Legal documents pertaining to the separation or any legal issues between you and your spouse

• Agreements between you and your spouse including pre-nuptial or post-nuptial

• Information about your children including any concerns about their welfare or special needs

• Records of assets, liabilities, and income including income tax returns

• Information or paperwork for other issues including restraining orders

Our role is to understand your story well enough to develop a strategy that is favorable to you, our client. To do this, we need a complete understanding of the situation.

• What happened to precipitate hiring a family law attorney?

• Is there an issue of domestic violence or other abusive behavior on the part of

you or your spouse?

• Are you or your spouse attempting to relocate the children?

• Is the welfare of the children at stake?

The answer may be as simple as you and your spouse have decided the marriage is over and it is time to move on. If that is the case, we may be able to settle the divorce without having to go to court.

It is always our goal to work with our clients to find the least stressful path to resolution to their family law matters, including divorce. For more information about the process of divorce or other family law matters, please contact us.
